HFFR Cable-When Should I Use It?
The use of Halogen Free Flame Retardant cable sheathing ( sometimes called HFFR cable) is rapidly growing in popularity. There are many locations where a high degree of fire prevention against both fire and fire damage has to be installed. Any location where people spend a great deal of time, such as; public buildings, workplaces, and public transportation sites need a great deal of protection. In addition, industrial locations and vital communications sites such as data centres also need adequate protection in a fire event.
The Benefits of HFFR Cable
In a fire situation, standard PVC sheathing
generates a considerable amount of dark smoke, and toxic and corrosive gas,
making them unsafe for environments such as the ones mentioned above. As an
alternative, HFFR cables are often used when a high degree of protection
against fire and fire damage is needed, because of their low smoke emissions,
low generation of corrosive and toxic gases and low fire propagation
characteristics.
It must be noted that Low Smoke and Fume (LSF)
cables are not the same as HFFR cables. LSF cable may still contain halogens,
but it does emit clearer smoke in smaller amounts than standard PVC sheathed
cable, and some types of HFFR cable. Conversely, some types of HFFR don`t
contain halogens, but may emit large quantities of thick smoke when burned.
There are some situations where a cable needs only one property or the other.
